Steam passes the 30 million concurrent users milestone

It seems that the world’s biggest PC games store is still ridiculously popular.

Steam has been the defacto PC gaming platform for over a decade, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down — surpassing 30 million concurrent users as of this past weekend.

According to SteamDB, roughly 30,032,005 people were online and using Steam on Sunday. Of that astounding number, approximately 10 million were in-game playing something, while the rest were only logged in. It’s an impressive feat nonetheless, particularly since Steam only surpassed 27 million users in November 2021.

For some additional perspective: it would take about 95 percent of Canada’s population to reach that number. Similarly, if Australia’s entire population logged into Steam, it still wouldn’t account for over 30 million players. Somewhere, Valve president Gabe Newell is smiling about all this – there’s no question.

Steam initially came out on Sept. 12, 2003, meaning the platform is almost 20 years old. Rival storefronts like the Epic Games Store and Xbox Game Pass have sprung up on PC since, but none have been able to match Steam’s popularity.

Earlier this year, Valve also launched the Steam Deck – a portable gaming PC that’s quickly becoming quite popular in and of itself. There were some availability problems initially, but you can order them without reservation now.
