Starship Troopers is getting a co-op shooter next year

Offworld Industries is bringing the cult classic 1990s scifi action franchise to a new medium.

Film buffs worldwide will almost certainly remember Starship Troopers, Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 satirical masterpiece where teenagers mow down thousands of giant insects. Much to, well, everyone’s surprise — you can get in on the bug-squashing fun next year.

On Monday, Offworld Industries announced Starship Troopers: Extermination. This 12-player co-op shooter pits humanity’s finest against swarms of massive arachnids with locations and iconography pulled straight from the 1997 film. Base building, resource gathering, and large-scale battles will be vital to the experience, so it’s seemingly more than just a run-and-gun affair. There’ll also be three playable classes: assault, support, and defense.

That “would you like to know more” line at the end is a wonderfully placed callback.

Offworld Industries is best known for the hit first-person shooter Squad, which has been tearing up Steam charts for some time now. According to a press release, Starship Troopers: Extermination will arrive in early access on PC sometime in 2023.

Given how vague that release tease is, it’ll likely be a while before anyone can get their hands on Starship Troopers: Extermination. Offworld Industries has loads of experience with first-person shooters and co-op games, so keeping an eye out for this one seems worth it.
