Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama loves challenge of playing Celtics

After the San Antonio Spurs’ recent loss to the Boston Celtics, Victor Wembanyama spoke about the challenge of playing great teams.

Not much has gone right for the San Antonio Spurs this year. The Jeremy Sochan point guard experiment failed, Charles Bassey went down with a season-ending injury, and they are just 5-27 on the season, placing them in last place in the Western Conference standings.

Luckily for the Spurs, the awe of Victor Wembanyama has masked most of the disappointment this season has brought. The 19-year-old Frenchman is clearly talented and has the potential to be a franchise centerpiece for years, regardless of the lack of success the team is having this season. Wembanyama is learning on the fly and gaining valuable experience along the way.

After the Spurs’ recent loss to the Boston Celtics, Wembanyama discussed his love for the challenge of taking on great teams.

“It’s difficult to play against them [the Celtics] and it’s a good challenge,” Wembanyama said via Jeremy Brener of Inside the Spurs. “I think we learned today. They made very few mistakes and that’s inspiring. We haven’t been winning every game so far and it’s not a problem to try different things.”

The Spurs fell to the Celtics by a score of 134-101, getting absolutely blown out by Boston, who is currently the best team in the NBA.

Despite the loss, Wembanyama put up solid numbers against the Celtics. He finished the night with 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while shooting 8-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc.

San Antonio may not win many games, especially against teams like Boston, but Wembanyama’s attitude couldn’t be any better.
