As the trade deadline approaches, the San Antonio Spurs seem unlikely to make much noise. Victor Wembanyama’s play has been promising, but they are sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference. Any move to help them in the short term could feel like a waste of assets, though they could explore some future-focused deals.
Meanwhile, further West, the Golden State Warriors are poised to shake things up amid a disappointing start to the season. The Spurs have some veterans that the Warriors could find useful, but who would they hand back to Spurs? They have a few intriguing youngsters, as well as guys like Andrew Wiggins and Chris Paul.
Jahlil Williams of Air Alamo recently discussed the idea of San Antonio potentially adding Wiggins in a trade but urged against the proposal.
“Andrew Wiggins is in the first year of a four-year contract with a player option in the final year,” Williams wrote. “He has exhibited a low basketball IQ too many times to think he would be in the Spurs plans long-term and picking him up to flip him for something else would be like trying to flip a Dreamcast gaming system and sell it to a kid. Yeah, it had a few cool games in the past but that time is gone so what are we doing here? There is no reason to give up any assets for him. Hard pass.”
After playing a big role in the Golden State Warriors’ title run, Wiggins missed a ton of time while dealing with personal issues last year, and so far this season, his struggles have been persistent.
