Spurs’ Gregg Popovich has high praise for ‘spectacular’ Devin Vassell

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich recently showed love to Devin Vassell.

When the season began, no one expected the San Antonio Spurs to compete for a championship. They may have had higher hopes than last place in the West, but the point is that the purpose of this season was always to begin the development of Victor Wembanyama, the future face of the franchise.

However, while Wembanyama is the clear star of the show, one of San Antonio’s top priorities should be to surround him with talent moving forward. Luckily for the Spurs, they already have some promising young guys on the team, including Devin Vassell, who has played great this season.

Head coach Gregg Popovich recently spoke about how confident he is in Vassell, noting that the Spurs are urging him to believe that he’s more than just a scorer. Popovich spoke highly of Vassell after his 34-point night in the Spurs’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“He was spectacular,” Popovich said via Matt Guzman of Inside the Spurs. “His aggressiveness is what we have been looking for. We tried to kind of convince him that he sells himself short if he just thinks of himself as a shooter. He has so much more.”

Vassell’s 34-point game was his second 30-point game of the season. He’s been the team’s best perimeter shot creator this year and looks like a great partner for Wembanyama.

The Spurs wing recently spoke about his budding chemistry with Wembanyama.

“It’s a work in progress,” Vassell said via Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News. “We are both trying to figure each other out. It’s still our first season playing together. I feel like it has been getting better and better each game. We just have to keep working on it.”

Both players are set to be great for the Spurs for years to come.
