Spurs goal this offseason is Victor Wembanyama ‘frontcourt research’

The San Antonio Spurs should spend the offseason figuring out their frontcourt with Victor Wembanyama.

With Victor Wembanyama leading the charge, the San Antonio Spurs are in a great spot moving forward. The 20-year-old rookie has looked amazing in his rookie season, and with head coach Gregg Popovich guiding him, he’s in great hands. The Spurs are undoubtedly looking to him as the face of the franchise heading into the future.

But having Wembanyama means the Spurs need to work hard to put a great team around him. He has the talent to be one of the best players in the NBA, but he can’t win a championship by himself. San Antonio needs to figure out how to best complement him.

According to Dan Favale of Bleacher Report, the Spurs’ offseason goal should be to figure out what their frontcourt will look like with Wembanyama.

“Distancing themselves from the “Victor Wembanyama shouldn’t be a center or the lone big” idea has proved to be a great move by the San Antonio Spurs,” Favale wrote. “Everyone involved is better off—the Spurs, Wemby, Tre Jones, everyone.

“Now comes the next phase of the Wembanyama experience: Determining the best fit for his primary frontline partner.

“Is it Jeremy Sochan? Keldon Johnson? Julian Champagnie? Devin Vassell-at-the-4? To be determined?

“We have plenty of intel this season on the above names, though Vassell and Sochan are seldom classified as 4s next to Wemby. But there’s a chance the answer isn’t yet on the roster.”

Who should the Spurs target to pair with Wembanyama?
