Heading into the summer, the San Antonio Spurs knew what their gameplan would be – draft Victor Wembanyama and figure out everything else later. They have a pretty good foundation in place, with plenty of young players on the roster who they will be attempting to develop alongside Wembanyama.
Among them is Devin Vassell, who enjoyed a career season last year despite only appearing in just 38 of the games. He dealt with a knee injury that held him out for the majority of the season. Now, heading into next year, Vassell has an opportunity to thrive as a second option next to Wembanyama.

In the 38 games Vassell appeared in, he averaged 18.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per contest while shooting 43.9% from the field and 38.7% from behind the three-point line.
Vassell should be slated to start at the shooting guard position next year, with the rest of the starting lineup likely including Tre Jones, Jeremy Sochan, Wembanyama, and Zach Collins.
There’s a chance that Sochan gets relegated to the bench in favor of Keldon Johnson, but that is yet to be seen. Both players have a case, but the Spurs could value Sochan’s defense a bit more than Johnson’s scoring in the starting lineup.
Regardless, knowing Vassell’s knee is in a good spot heading into next season should be music to Spurs fans’ ears, as he will be an integral part of their future plans moving forward.
