Spring Football: A look at the linebacker position

A breakdown of Oklahoma’s MIKE and WILL linebacker positions as spring football nears.

Positional Breakdown: Middle Linebacker

Starter: DaShaun White

In 2020, White made 10 starts at middle linebacker and totaled 38 tackles, 5.0 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. Coaches have stressed that the former four-star recruit is instinctive. For the middle linebacker role, that is imperative. Not only knowing where the ball is but anticipating what the offense will do and getting guys lined up. White is certainly the correct man for the job and understands Grinch’s system. He controls the middle of the field with natural reads/reactions and tackles ball carriers between the tackles.

Ugwoegbu provides depth behind White. He had three starts last season and compiled 34 total tackles, one interception, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, six quarterback hurries and a blocked punt. Ugwoegbu originally played Grinch’s rush linebacker role, but Brian Odom moved him to the MIKE. White is the primary starter, but Ugwoegbu has been consistent and delivers when given opportunities.
