Spring Football: A look at the cornerback position

A breakdown of the cornerback position for the Oklahoma Sooners ahead of spring practices starting early next week.

Nickel Back

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Starter: Jeremiah Criddell

Criddell will be the starting slot corner. He played in 11 games in 2020 and totaled 12 tackles. He had a limited role behind Brendan Radley-Hiles last season and will need to take advantage of his increased snaps in 2021.

The former four-star recruit is a physical corner that can be equally as productive in press coverage or sliding back as an off-ball, outside linebacker. Criddell makes plays in the box and fits the position to perfection at 5-11, 200 pounds. He will be exciting to watch as spring football kicks off in Norman. Pat Fields and Billy Bowman can also provide depth behind Criddell at nickel back. Fields is predominately a strong safety, but can move to the slot as well.
