Spring Ball Takeaways: Another first-team QB in 11-on-11 drills for Oregon Ducks

We got to watch more 11-on-11 drills Thursday. There was a new QB taking the first reps, and a potential wrinkle in the offense we got a glimpse of.

A lot was made of the fact that it was redshirt-freshman QB Ty Thompson who was working with the “first-team” offense last week when the Oregon Ducks went through 11-on-11 drills in the portion of practice that was open to the media.

In the midst of a quarterback battle between Thompson, Bo Nix, and Jay Butterfield, it seemed noteworthy that Thompson was taking the first reps. However, in the days since, head coach Dan Lanning and offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham have said repeatedly that there is no first-team or second-team at this point, and rather they are continually rotating players in and out and working to find the right pieces to fit together.

“We really don’t have a first, second-team, third team, we got green group yellow group, and it’s moving every day,” Lanning said. “You’ll see if you’re out there trying to pay attention that you’re probably paying attention to the wrong thing because that’s not… we don’t have a depth chart right now.”

So when Bo Nix was taking the first reps of the day in 11-on-11 drills on Thursday morning in Oregon’s practice, we made note but knew not to make too much of it. We did, however, find some takeaways in combinations of players out there, and some standout plays from the “fast ball” session. Here are takeaways from the practice at large:
