Source: Patriots agree to terms with RB Ty Montgomery to 2-year contract

He’s technically a running back. But expect the Patriots to experiment.

The New England Patriots have signed running back Ty Montgomery to a two-year contract worth up to $4 million, a source told Patriots Wire and as first reported by USA TODAY’s Josina Anderson.

The Patriots will be Montgomery’s fifth team during his eight-year career. He has played for the Packers, Ravens, Saints and Jets. He entered the NFL as a third-round draft choice as a receiver, but moved to running back over the course of his career. He has had limited usage in recent years, and in 2021, he had nine carries for 2.9 yards and 16 catches 95 yards. He has also returned kicks during his career.

With versatility, he might remind some Patriots fans of Cordarrelle Patterson — though Montgomery has never rivaled Patterson’s production, particularly after his touches exploded with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021.

The Patriots will add Montgomery to a backfield that includes Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, James White and J.J. Taylor.
