One of the hottest teams in the country over the last two months stayed hot as the Oklahoma Sooners took down the No. 4 Virginia Tech Hokies to advance to the College World Series. Oklahoma is heading to Omaha for the first time since 2010.
The Sooners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off of home runs from Peyton Graham and Tanner Tredaway. Virginia Tech tied the game up in the third, but the Sooners responded with three runs in the fourth inning to take control of the deciding game in the Super Regionals.
Tredaway launched his second home run of the game in the fourth and the Sooners got RBIs from Brett Squires and Kendall Pettis to give the Sooners some cushion against the Hokies, who have a great offense in their own right.
Cade Horton, who has pitched well for Oklahoma in the NCAA tournament put together another quality outing and gave the Sooners a shutdown inning after Oklahoma’s three-run fourth. Horton wouldn’t give up much for the rest of his day. After the two-run third, Horton allowed just two base runners the rest of the way before coming out of the game in the seventh. He went six innings, giving up two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out eight Hokies.
Chazz Martinez and Trevin Michael pitched three scoreless innings in relief to preserve the game for the Sooners and send them on with a chance to make some serious noise in Omaha.
Offensively, Oklahoma kept pouring it on, plating runs in every inning from the fourth on.
Tredaway wouldn’t be denied on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, three runs, and three RBIs. Blake Robertson, Jimmy Crooks, and Brett Squires each collected multiple hits and eight different Sooners drove in a run in the Sooners blow-out win of Virginia Tech.
Oklahoma continues their national championship pursuit against future SEC foe Texas A&M on Friday in their first game of the College World Series. With how they’ve performed the last couple of months, they’re a team to be reckoned with as the remaining schools convene in Omaha.
