Sony halts PlayStation sales in Russia

The company is also donating $2 million towards Ukraine relief.

Sony will not be selling the PS4, PS5, or Gran Turismo 7 in Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

On Wednesday, PlayStation announced its business plans in Russia following the State of Play showcase

“Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) joins the global community in calling for peace in Ukraine,” PlayStation’s statement reads on Twitter. “We have suspended all software and hardware shipments, the launch of Gran Turismo 7, and operations of the PlayStation Store in Russia.”

The Sony Group Corporation is also donating $2 million towards the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Save the Children to aid with relief efforts in Ukraine.

Sony is only the latest company within the games industry to stop doing business in Russia while the conflict is happening. Microsoft did the same with Xbox last week, as did Electronic Arts and CD Projekt Red. All of this came after Ukraine’s vice prime minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for major video game corporations to stop selling products in Russia.

The Pokémon Company also made a $200,000 donation towards humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, and id Software co-founder John Romero is raising relief funds by selling unreleased Doom 2 content.
