A report surfaced late Thursday night that stated former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was the leading candidate to become the linebackers coach at Texas.
Whether you’re a night owl or an early bird, the report sent Texas fans into a frenzy on Twitter. Many were disgusted that Stoops could potentially be wearing the burnt orange. Rivalry aside, fans couldn’t fathom that Stoops was the best option available.
It appears that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is forming an impressive staff that has been applauded by many, but it’s still not official on who will be coaching the linebackers for Texas. Could this be the one hire that causes a ruckus among the fan base?
Fortunately, the heated concern quickly transitioned to a sigh of relief when Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman reported on Friday that Texas is not hiring Stoops.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian tells me this morning the Horns are not hiring Mike Stoops. He does have someone else in mind for LB coach, hopes to finalize later today. “I’m really excited about who we’re talking to.”

It’s unknown at this time who the favorite is to land the final role on Sarkisian’s staff, but it’s clear that the new head coach is taking his time with a thorough search.
Did the backlash on social media cause Sarkisian to look in a different direction? You’d hope not, but this fan base has been known to impact decisions in the past.
Take a look at a few of the best reactions from the whirlwind of emotions following the Stoops report.
