Last year, former Cincinnati Reds and Fox broadcaster Thom Brennaman lost his job when he used a homophobic slur caught on a hot mic. Well, some announcers are still saying terrible things on the air.
On Tuesday, racist rhetoric found its way into CBS Sports’ broadcast of the UEFA Champions League semifinal second leg between PSG and Manchester City.
In the 69th minute with City up 2-0, Angel Di Maria was sent off after he kicked at the leg of Fernandinho on the sidelines. Di Maria’s foul was out of frustration amid a poor showing in the semifinal, but for commentator Jim Beglin, it was inexplicably a result of Di Maria’s Argentinian heritage.
Beglin, watching the replay of the foul, said, “It’s that Latino temperament.”
So his Latino temperament is the reason? #UCL @CBSSportsNet pic.twitter.com/5qxrmfzsfR

Beglin’s stereotypical and prejudiced remark was noticed by plenty of viewers, and they proceeded to rip the CBS announcer on Twitter — and justifiably so. Beglin apologized on the broadcast, but it didn’t stop the strong response.
"That Latino temperament"? What?

“Earlier in this broadcast I noted that ‘latino temperament’ may be to blame for a red card. That was wrong. I’m embarrassed by my actions, and there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.”

I was waiting for the "It's that Ukrainian Temperament" line from this TV commentator about Zinchenko since his tantrum came right after the DiMaria red card drew a "it's that Latino temperament" line. Funny that it never came.
NEITHER should be said.
What a joke. 🤦♂️

Di Maria straight red for stomping on Fernandinho. Deserved. Commentators blame it on "Latino Temperament."

Jim Beglin in 5 minutes: “I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith, as there’s a drive by Kevin De Bruyne into the top corner and that’ll be a goal. And so that’ll make it a 3-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’m going to be putting on this headset again…” https://t.co/sr5DtS767s
