Sixers’ Shake Milton explains nickname, relationship with Larry Brown

Philadelphia 76ers guard Shake Milton explains how he got his nickname and his relationship with Larry Brown.

Young Philadelphia 76ers guard Shake Milton has begun to get a lot of attention after scoring a career-high 39 points against the Los Angeles Clippers. He has become quite the success story after he was picked 54th overall in the 2018 draft.

He now is making guest appearances on ESPN as he joined “The Jump” to discuss his current basketball life. He discussed how he has taken over the starting point guard duties from the injured Ben Simmons and how life has begun to change a bit.

He also revealed how he was gifted with the nickname “Shake” as his real name is Malik. Milton said:

So my dad in college, he played basketball too, and they called him the ‘Milkman’. They said he delivered it right to your doorstep. When I was with my mom, they would say ‘How’s little milkshake doing?’ and then Shake just stuck around so I’ve really been called Shake my whole life.

Milton hails from SMU where he was coached by the legendary Larry Brown. Of course, Brown also coached the Sixers for six seasons leading them to the NBA Finals in 2001. Milton said he and Brown have a great relationship:

That’s my guy. We still talk pretty regularly too. He’ll call me up or send me a text message and just show love. He was always on you tough, but at the same time, you knew he was going to take care of you and he treated you like family. That’s my guy.

Milton and the Sixers take on the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night. [lawrence-related id=27002,26979,26971]
