Sixers rookie Paul Reed reacts to winning G League MVP, goals for season

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Paul Reed reacts to winning the G League MVP award while also laying out his goals the rest of the way.

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Paul Reed had himself a very productive season down in the G League bubble in Orlando. Suiting up for Philadelphia’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, the rookie out of DePaul averaged 22.3 points and 11.8 rebounds while helping Delaware get to the title game.

Those efforts helped him earn the 2021 G League MVP award as well as being named to the All-G League First Team, the All-Rookie Team, and the All-Defensive Team. He was terrific in Orlando and winning the G League MVP award is just the beginning for a guy who is learning everything “out the mud”.

“It’s a great accomplishment for sure,” said Reed who is now with the Sixers for the rest of the season. “For me, I just want to stay grounded and stay focused on tomorrow and today. Just focus on the game, focus on, trying to get better every day and continuing to improve so I can hopefully win another one of those awards.”

Reed does not earn many minutes on a veteran Sixers team. As a rookie, he is still behind proven veterans such as Mike Scott and Tony Bradley on the bench, but he still has goals for himself to be able to eventually earn playing time and help the team win.

“My minutes are scarce,” Reed explained. “I just want to get on the court and be able to help my team win. That’s my biggest goal. I get on the court and like to say I played good and help the team win.”

A productive season like the one he had in Orlando can be helpful. It is all about taking everything he experienced there and applying it to this next level.

“Playing in the G League really helped me boost my confidence and get better,” said Reed. “The awards, they’re just coming from the hard work I put in and it showed me what hard work takes.”

The Sixers will certainly give him his opportunity soon if he can continue to take strides forward. For now, he has to be able to sit and learn from the veterans ahead of him and take in their advice to apply it to his own game.

Philadelphia will take on the Golden State Warriors at 10 p.m. EST on Tuesday in The Bay.
