Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is one of the best defenders in the league as he is a guy who will take on the opposition’s best scorer on an every night basis.
However, the one thing that is holding him back a bit is his lack of offense.
While Thybulle is a consistent member of the All-Defensive Teams, he is an afterthought on the offensive end. He averaged 5.7 points and he shot 31.3% from deep on 2.2 attempts in the 2021-22 season as he is still not a huge offensive threat.
Due to Thybulle’s lack of offensive development, they signed Danuel House Jr. who is a solid defender and somebody who can also knock down open triples. He helps them win right now as somebody who can produce on both ends while Thybulle still needs development.
Therefore, the Sixers have thought about trading the three-year forward with the Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers showing interest in him. He’s also got one year left on his contract the Sixers have thought about also extending the defensive stud out of Washington if they can’t find any fair deals for him, but there hasn’t been any traction on those talks.
Per Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report:
There hasn’t been traction on extension conversations with Thybulle, sources said. Most extension dialogues don’t begin in earnest until summer approaches fall. But Thybulle may be the perfect case to buck the league’s recent trend of growing extension numbers. If the current trade market is an early indication of next summer’s free agency, Thybulle’s value could struggle to recover from a poor postseason showing, with his vaccination status further complicating matters. Perhaps there’s room for Thybulle to bet on himself in hopes of landing a richer deal next offseason.
It will be interesting to see what the Sixers will do with Thybulle as they move forward. He is obviously an elite defender, but his lack of offense continues to hold him back and the additions of both House Jr. and PJ Tucker make him a real possibility to be moved or just not extended.
