Sixers call for accountability amid George Floyd protests in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia 76ers are calling for accountability during this time of protesting.

The city of Philadelphia experienced its own form of protests on Saturday night as the world comes together in support of George Floyd who was murdered in Minneapolis by a police officer. Philadelphia 76ers forwards Tobias Harris and Matisse Thybulle participated in a peaceful walk on Saturday before things did begin to escalate.

The protests are due to a few of the police officers involved in Floyd’s death remain free. While the main officer who committed the crime is now in police custody and he was charged with third-degree murder, that is just not enough right now as the protestors look to make a statement.

The 76ers organization sent out a statement on Sunday afternoon calling for accountability in a time such as this one:

Our black community and people of color continue to face racism, prejudice and injustice. It is unacceptable and we cannot and will not tolerate it in our community. Now, more than ever, we must strive for accountability, including ensuring that our community is treated with fairness, transparency and dignity.
We must stay united and strong during the conflict and hurt we are experiencing.
The 76ers are committed to using our voice and taking action to support and drive change that is long overdue.

Harris then posted on his Instagram a picture from his part of the march on Saturday and he was proud of what he saw.
