Sixers 2020 free agency guide: D.J. Augustin fits roster needs, price range

The Philadelphia 76ers could go after a guy like D.J. Augustin in free agency.

With the NBA getting set to begin the 2020-21 season on December 22, now is the time to get ready for what should be a fast and furious free agency period. With the NBA draft being on November 18, free agency is set to begin shortly thereafter.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, they do not have much in terms of money to spend. They currently have a lot of big contracts on the roster and they will have roughly $6 million to spend in free agency. They will be able to make one maybe two moves during that time.

We begin our guide to Sixers free agency by taking a look at somebody who fits both the team’s price range and the needs on their roster. They need somebody who can shoot the ball as well as handle it and run the offense a bit and that guy is D.J. Augustin.

Augustin is a career 37.9% shooter from deep and he over 41% from deep in two of his four seasons with the Orlando Magic. He would come cheap as a veteran point guard who can provide solid play off the bench and he can even start for stretches if needed.

John Hollinger of The Athletic broke it down like this on Augustin:

After another solid year in Orlando, Augustin is getting long in the tooth (33 this season) and is pretty small, so teams should be wary of a multi-year contract. But as a short-term commitment to a backup who is capable of starting 15 games, you’d have a hard time doing much better than Augustin. He’s an ace pick-and-roll guard who shoots well from the perimeter.

If Daryl Morey and Elton Brand can persuade him to accept a smaller contract, they could also bring in another piece and they could also get a steal in free agency. Due to the position the team is in, they do not need to swing for the fences. They just need somebody to fill an important need of shooting on their team. [lawrence-related id=38886,38882,38879]
