Signs ‘pointing toward’ the Chicago Bears picking Caleb Williams at No. 1 in NFL draft

How the Bears will play their cards is a drama which has not yet run its course. Until then, there’s uncertainty.

You probably didn’t need The Dan Patrick Show to tell you this, but the Chicago Bears are likely to take Caleb Williams with the top pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft on April 25. The sense that the Bears are moving toward taking Williams instead of trading down with another team is powerfully felt, but it is also not an absolute lock. It is the majority view, but it’s not a certainty.

One obvious point to make is that Justin Fields needs to be traded before we can be 100-percent sure the Bears are taking Caleb Williams. As long as a deal hasn’t yet been executed and finalized, some uncertainty will linger. The Bears need to push Fields out of the picture so that they can move forward with their plan for Caleb, if indeed that is what they want to do. If the Bears don’t immediately secure a package for Fields, another NFL team could swoop in and make a bold, daring offer for the No. 1 pick. The Bears would need to insist on a titanic price for the pick, but if they get it, then they could reconsider taking Caleb. They could build around Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye because they would get so many more pieces by trading the No. 1 pick for a massive return.

How the Bears play their cards is a drama which has not yet run its course. Caleb Williams will be watching.
