The Broncos have not yet declared a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Chargers but signs point to second-round draft choice Drew Lock making his first NFL debut. Lock will be given more reps in practice this week, which may mean he is preparing to start.
“We’re going to up Drew’s reps this week extensively in practice, see how he does with that and then make a decision prior to the game,” coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday.
Fangio said the team might not make (or at least declare) the decision until right before the game. Lock returned to practice two weeks ago but has not yet been activated from injured reserve. Denver is expected to promote him to the 53-man roster later this week.
“He’s had a couple good weeks of limited practices and seems like — I think he’s ready to advance in his reps and let’s see where he’s at further,” Fangio said. “When you’re [only] getting eight to 10 [snaps] with the offense, it’s not a great look, but he passed those and let’s see where he’s at with getting more.”
Fangio said undrafted rookie Brett Rypien probably wouldn’t serve as the backup if Lock starts. Rypien was the backup behind Brandon Allen for the team’s last three games. If Lock does start, Allen will likely be his backup.
