Shunsuke Mitsui named SEC Freshman of the Week

Tennessee freshman Shunsuke Mitsui wins award for the third time.

Tennessee men’s tennis player Shunsuke Mitsui has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.

Mitsui, who hails from Shizuoka, Japan, achieved the honor for the second consecutive week and for the third time this season.

This regular season, Mitsui was only one of two players in the SEC to win 20 singles matches in dual competition and was the only freshman to accomplish that feat in 2021-22.

He had three wins last week as Tennessee defeated Alabama and No. 28 Auburn.

Mitsui won a pair of singles matches to improve to 20-3 overall in dual singles play this season. He has a 10-1 mark in SEC play and has won 10 of his last 11 matches.

In doubles, he teamed with Emile Hudd to defeat the Crimson Tide’s tandem of Enzo Aguiard and Juan Martin, 6-2, on the No. 2 rung of the doubles ladder.
