Quarterback Josh Rosen was a great high school quarterback and a good prospect in college, but his career in the NFL has been tumultuous so far.
Rosen was drafted by the Cardinals, where he failed to show any flashes of promise on what was a bad team at the time. Then, Arizona drafted Kyler Murray No. 1 overall, shipping Rosen off to Miami.
Rosen’s brief stint with the Dolphins came to an end when the team waived him this week. Now that a once-valued quarterback is up for grabs, should the Vikings try to sign him?
It should be said that Rosen has been reportedly signed to the Buccaneers practice squad. However, the Vikings could still theoretically poach Rosen from the practice squad if the team wanted to do that.
CBS Sports listed Minnesota as one of the five teams Rosen could end up on. Here’s what the outlet said about the Vikings:
“Are the Vikings going to stick with Sean Mannion as Kirk Cousins’ backup again in 2020? He didn’t impress in his one start last year, as in the regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears, Mannion completed 12 of 21 passes for 126 yards and two interceptions. The Vikings lost, 21-19. Jake Browning and Nate Stanley didn’t make it through cut day, so Rosen could be an intriguing option if the Vikings want to upgrade behind Cousins. It also appears Cousins finally came into his own as the starting quarterback of the Vikings last year, and the veteran could help Rosen develop and find his way in this league.”
Rosen has decent upside, but is not a very proven commodity at the NFL level. That said, it would be interesting if the Vikings took a flyer on him. Personally, I’m kind of torn on this. I think Rosen probably has a higher ceiling but a lower floor than Mannion. That said, Mannion hasn’t really impressed with Minnesota so far. It’s hard to say, but if I had to guess, I don’t think the Vikings would take that sort of risk.
