Should the Bears trade for Jets safety Jamal Adams?

Jets safety Jamal Adams wants out of New York. Should the Bears pursue him?

On Thursday, New York Jets safety Jamal Adams requested a trade from the New York Jets after the lack of progress and communication in contract talks.

The All-Pro safety requested to be traded to these seven teams: Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks.

The Bears weren’t one of the seven teams listed, but perhaps there might be interest brewing or consideration down the road.

Even though Adams wants out of the Jets organization, he still has two years left on his rookie contract and the team doesn’t plan on trading him. Adams and his agent don’t have permission to speak to other teams.

If the Jets change their mind about trading the 24-year old safety, Adams still has no say in his destination. Adams is looking to be among the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL.

This is somewhat turning into a Khalil Mack-like situation. Both wanted to be paid the highest among defensive players, their teams don’t want to trade them and both have no say on where they go. The difference is that Mack was a two-time All-Pro, a Defensive Player of the Year and had one year left on his contract with the then-Oakland Raiders.

Financially, the Bears can’t make this trade, especially with players like Allen Robinson, Tarik Cohen, Kyle Fuller, Akiem Hicks, James Daniels, Bilal Nichols, Anthony Miller, Charles Leno (club-option), and Roquan Smith (club-option) are set to become free agents within two years.

If the Bears were to trade for Adams, the defense would be absolutely incredible. Adams with Eddie Jackson would make the best safety duo in the league. But the Bears safety room isn’t something that is bothering them as they have Jackson, Deon Bush, and newly signed Tashaun Gipson.

The Bears would have to give up a huge price, which could require premium picks and a player, for a guy that could be a rental. If Adams is a rental, the defense is going to be scary, but general manager Ryan Pace has to understand there’s a two-year window and if the Lombardi Trophy isn’t brought back to Chicago, things could go rough.
