Shams: Celtics signing forwards Kelan Martin, Malik Fitts to 10-day deals

The pair will get the Celtics to the league minimum for roster sizes in the regular season.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed a pair of players — small forward Kelan Martin and power forward Malik Fitts — on 10-day deals per The AThletic’s Shams Charania. The moves get their roster to the league’s 14-man minimum teams are required to carry throughout the course of an NBA season.

Martin is a familiar face for team president Brad Stevens as a product of Butler who has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves and most recently the Indiana Pacers this and last season, while Fitts, a product of St. Mary’s, last played for the Utah Jazz this season and the Los Angeles Clippers in 2020-21.

Both will be eligible for another 10-day deal should the team want more feedback before tendering a rest-of-season contract.

But, it’s possible one or both are placeholders to keep the Celtics from falling afoul of league roster size rules while they compete for the services of some of the bigger names on the buyout market when they become available.

With neither of the two especially adept at moving or shooting the ball with the sort of efficiency and volume that would suggest they were likely to stick, that may be the case.
