Several Sooners earn national player of the week honors after win over Texas

After a huge win over Texas, several Sooners earn national honors.

The awards keep on coming for the Oklahoma Sooners after their big win at the [autotag]Cotton Bowl[/autotag] on Saturday. These two awards are national players of the week.

[autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] was named the [autotag]Maxwell Award National Player of the Week[/autotag] and [autotag]Walter Rouse[/autotag] was named the [autotag]Outland Trophy National Player of the Week[/autotag]. Jalil Farooq was awarded the Paul Hornung National Player of the Week award.

Gabriel had a statement game in the win over Texas. He threw for 285 yards and ran for 113 on the ground. He also threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown in the win. His 113 yards rushing were a career-high. He was perfect on the final drive of the game to help Oklahoma come out on top.

Rouse might be the unsung hero. Rouse blocked two players on the final play, allowing Gabriel just enough time to get the throw off. The offensive line and Gabriel stood tall on that final series. The Sooners offensive line allowed just one sack on the day. However, Brent Venables mentioned the one sack was on a designed quarterback draw, so it should have been registered as a tackle for loss. Rouse and the offensive line helped the Sooners run for a season-high 201 yards in the win.

Jalil Farooq had a career-high 130 yards receiving on five catches. He also added 13 yards rushing. All five of his receptions went for first downs.

It was Oklahoma’s first win over a top-five team since 2017. OU gained 486 yards and scored 34 points against a Texas team, allowing only 290.8 yards and 12.8 points per game.

It was a huge win for the Oklahoma Sooners and it’s only right the key players in the game were honored with prestigious awards.
