Series History: How past Oregon and Texas Tech matchups have shaken out

This will be the third time that Oregon and Texas Tech have ever played before. How did the first two matchups go? Take a look.

On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks will have their first matchup of the season against a fellow FBS team: the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas Tech lost their first matchup of the season to the Wyoming Cowboys, but they still have plenty of skill on both sides of the ball to pose a real challenge to the Ducks.

This will be the third-ever matchup between the two teams, but it will be the first in over a quarter-century. The last matchup was the second leg of a home-and-home series in 1992 — the first leg came the year before. Oregon was victorious in both games, winning 28-13 in 1991 and 16-13 in 1992.

In 1991 and 1992 the Oregon Ducks were coached by Rich Brooks and quarterbacked by Danny O’Neil. In 1991, the Ducks finished 3-8 and in 1992, they finished 6-6 and went on to lose in the Independence Bowl. These were some of Rich Brooks’ final seasons as the Oregon coach, and it’s a shame that they didn’t have better results — though, in his final season in 1994, the team went 9-4.

As I said, the Red Raiders lost their first game of the season in 2023, despite being heavy favorites in the game. This isn’t a reason for the Ducks to take their foot off the gas though, as Texas Tech will be heavily motivated not to start their season 0-2, especially since they were a team with Top 25 potential to begin the season.
