See it: Giants’ Joe Schoen laughs when asked about Dexter Lawrence contract

Did Dexter Lawrence play well enough to warrant a second contract? That question made New York Giants GM Joe Schoen laugh out loud.

New York Giants nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was absolutely dominant in 2022. He took his game to the next level and then the one after that. He was voted into the Pro Bowl and named a Second-Team All-Pro, which some felt was a snub.

No one — not even Aaron Donald — dominated in the way Lawrence did this past season. In fact, he played so exceptionally well that general manager Joe Schoen had to laugh when asked about whether or not Lawrence deserved a second contract.

“Yeah, I would say Dexter has done enough,” Schoen said mid-laugh. “Dexter played well and we’ve got him under the fifth-year option and that will be part of our in-the-season review of how we want to approach that (contract). But, yeah, Dexter played really well. Great person, great teammate, and happy he’s here.”

Asked specifically if the Giants will discuss a contract extension for Lawrence, Schoen certainly didn’t deny it.

“If you presume,” Schoen said. “We’re going to talk about it here in the future.”

The Giants do have several difficult decisions to make on impending free agents and players entering the final year of their deal, but it seems pretty clear Lawrence will be kept around long-term one way or another.
