More Mountain West games are axed

The SEC becomes the latest conference to go to a league-only slate and with that comes a few more cancelation for the Mountain West. They also are the fourth out of five power conferences to go this slate with only the Big 12 not yet committed to doing that, but that league has its media days on Monday, Aug. 3.

There are four Mountain West teams that are having games canceled because of the SEC deciding to play against its own.

  • Colorado State at Vanderbilt (Sept. 26)
  • Fresno State at Texas A&M (Oct. 10)
  • Nevada at Arkansas (Sept. 5)
  • New Mexico at Mississippi State (Sept. 5)

Colorado State is down to nine games, Fresno State and New Mexico are at 10, and Nevada has lost just one game and has 11 scheduled.

There is no word on who these teams will add, or if the Mountain West will go to a league-only slate. However, Conference USA could be a league to communicate with to add games as they are going with eight conference games and can schedule up to four more non-conference games to get to 12.

It might not be ideal to play Conference USA over losing out on Power 5 teams but it is more football and could be a way for the Mountain West to get closer to a 12-game schedule.
