We’ve been hearing all week about CBS walking away from the SEC after their contract ends in 2023, and what this means for SEC coverage, especially with College Football.
CBS’s current contract with the SEC is $55 million a year. But when their contract ends in 2023, CBS’ contract would drastically increase to $300 million a year.
The Birmingham Business Journal contacted CBS Sports which shared why they made the decision to step away from the SEC after their contract ends up. “We made a strong and responsible bid. While we‘ve had success with the SEC on CBS, we are instead choosing to aggressively focus on other important strategic priorities moving forward.”
As for ESPN, they seem to be in negotiations with the SEC with a contract that could be worth up to $330 million dollars per year.
This will be an interesting move, considering with CBS, the SEC was the primary focus of college football, but with ESPN, the SEC will be one of many conferences in which their games are broadcasted.
This will continue to be something to monitor as negotiations continue, but it seems to be a done deal with ESPN and the SEC.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the SEC’s coverage, and if it affects viewership.
Roll Tide Wire will keep you up to date with the very latest regarding this negotiation, and what it means for the SEC.
