Sean Payton just can’t help himself: the ex-New Orleans Saints head coach has brought yet another one of his former players with him to the Denver Broncos. Tuesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire reports the addition of free agent kicker Brett Maher to Denver’s roster — Maher, of course, was the best of a rough group of kickers during the 2021 season.
Maher connected on 16 of his 18 field goals with the Saints that year, though he didn’t make a single try from more than 42 yards. He also went 10-of-12 on extra point attempts. He is coming off a strong year with the Dallas Cowboys, having hit 29 of 32 field goals and 50 of his 53 point-after tries (which led the league), so maybe he’ll do well in the mountains.
The Broncos have brought plenty of former Saints players to Denver, including wide receivers Marquez Callaway and Lil’Jordan Humphrey, fullback Michael Burton, running back Tony Jones Jr., and tight end Adam Trautman, who they acquired in a trade with New Orleans. Now Maher joins many of his former teammates.
