Sean McVay grateful for Bobby Wagner as Rams make split with LB official

Sean McVay praised Bobby Wagner after the Rams announced their split with the LB

The Los Angeles Rams are splitting with linebacker Bobby Wagner after just one season, news that was made official by the team on Wednesday. The Rams haven’t released him just yet, but they will do so at the start of the new league year on March 15.

The Rams thanked Wagner on Twitter, bidding farewell to the star linebacker who helped lead the defense in 2022. Sean McVay also issued a statement on Wagner’s release, praising him for the job he did in one season in Los Angeles.

“Bobby is an outstanding competitor and a leader that elevates everyone around him,” McVay said in a statement. “His perspective, steadiness, and consistency set an example for our players, coaches and staff. We are grateful for Bobby and his contributions to our organization during his time with the Rams.”

Because the Rams are waiting until the start of the league year to release Wagner, it could mean they’ll designate him a post-June 1 cut, which would save them $8 million in cap space. They’ll still have to eat $7.5 million in dead money, but that will be spread out in 2023 and 2024 if he is a post-June 1 release.

In that case, the Rams wouldn’t get the cap relief until June. If he’s a standard cut in March, they’ll get $5 million in cap space right away.
