Odell Beckham Jr. made his debut for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers. The Pro Bowl wideout was limited to only 15 snaps versus the 49ers, catching two passes for 18 yards from Matthew Stafford.
Throughout the week of practice entering Week 12, McVay continually said that Beckham would see an increased role for the Rams. Following Sunday’s performance by Beckham, which included a 54-yard touchdown catch, McVay is encouraged by what he’s seen from the talented wide receiver thus far.
“He did a nice job. I continue to say it but for him to be able to play as many snaps and do as many different things as he is on such a short amount of time that we’ve been together — I think it’s a real credit to his football acumen and how smart he is,” McVay said Monday. “Clearly, made the big play on the double move, the long touchdown, had a couple of other catches. To his credit, I think there’s a lot of things that he would be able to tell you that we can kind of build on and improve upon, whether it’s detail understanding. But he’s really smart, very coachable, very receptive to some of these things, and we just want to continue to just get him, implemented, take advantage of the skill set, and the great traits that he has, and see how he can continue to help our offense. And we’ve just got to be more efficient overall, but Odell did some really good things yesterday.”
Ahead of the showdown with the 49ers in Week 10, Beckham had less than a week of practice to prepare for his debut. So a limited number of snaps and a lack of usage was to be expected.
But with Robert Woods out for the rest of the season, Beckham now needs to be a key member of the aerial attack alongside Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, and Tyler Higbee. We got a glimpse of what Beckham is still capable of when he hauled in a pass on a nice double-move for a touchdown in Sunday’s loss to the Packers.
Beckham came out of Sunday’s contest with a hip pointer, but McVay doesn’t believe it will affect his status for Week 13. As long as Beckham has a healthy week of practice, we should expect the veteran wide receiver to have another notable performance versus the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars this week.
