The Buffalo Bills barely got going against the Pittsburgh Steelers on offense en route to a 23-16 loss on opening day.
Bills running back Zack Moss, specifically, never got going at all. That’s because he didn’t play.
When the Bills announced their inactives 90 minutes before kickoff, the second-year running back was amongst them in a surprise.
After the game, McDermott was short in explaining the decision.
“Numbers. Just numbers,” McDermott said via video conference.
While the Bills did struggle on offense in the game, the finger cannot be pointed to the rushing attack. Buffalo rarely used it until the second half and running back Devin Singletary broke off a few decent chunks of yards then, including a 25-yard rush.
Still, we can take one thing from McDermott’s comments. It does not appear to be injury related. Rather, it was performance based.
The Bills felt better playing Matt Breida instead, who had four rushing yards on four carries.
As a rookie in 2020, Moss started to see more carries late in the season over Singletary until an ankle injury ended his year. Moss appeared en route to potentially be more of the “starter” in the team’s backfield rotation this year… but all of that now seems like a distant memory.
