The Seattle Seahawks’ fatal flaw last year was their inability to stop the run. If they have any hope of advancing past San Francisco and Philadelphia – the two best teams at running the football – vast improvement in this department is a necessity.
Seattle did sign defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones from Denver and brought back Jarran Reed in free agency, but critics of their 2023 NFL draft will say they did not address defensive line as well as they could have. The Seahawks waited mostly until Day 3 of the draft to start picking defensive linemen, such as as Mike Morris from Michigan.
Morris’ draft profile suggests he will be better suited at stopping the run than rushing the passer, which, quite frankly, is still very much a need for the Seahawks has they had difficulty setting the edge last year. But in order for this to happen, Seattle wants Morris playing big… in every sense of the word. From Seahawks.com:
“Schneider gets Michigan defensive end Mike Morris on the phone to tell him he’s coming to Seattle. ‘I’m ready to work my ass off,’ Morris tells Schneider. Hurtt gets on the phone and tells Morris, who moved around on the line at Michigan, that they see him as playing big in Seattle’s defense as a 3-technique end: ‘You don’t have to worry about backing up from the table anymore, you keep the damn calories on, you hear me?'”
