Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was at a loss for words and safety Jamal Adams was furious, but quarterback Russell Wilson was none of those things.
Following a stunning upset loss to the New York Giants on Sunday in Seattle, quarterback Russell Wilson stood at the podium and didn’t dress things up for reporters. He owned what had just happened plain and clear: the Giants were the better team.
“I think they did a really good job of doing some stuff with their coverage, just trying to keep everything in front pretty much,” Wilson said. “They had some timely calls. . . I think they did a good job. They did a good job of making some plays and pressuring, timely pressures, and this and that against us.
“Each game has its own story and unfortunately, I think the reality of this story was we weren’t able to capitalize on opportunities. . . they stopped us on some key situations, situational football, they stopped us.”
There will likely be a lot of finger pointing in Seattle this week, but Wilson believes some of that finger pointing should go in the direction of Patrick Graham. Occasionally you’re just beat by a better team, and the veteran quarterback acknowledges that’s what happened in Week 13.
“They’re a good defense, balanced, they have done a good job. Coached well. They had some things covered up and they kind of tried to keep everything in front and that, and we didn’t really have anything down the field,” Wilson said. “It’s an NFL team. Sometimes it’s going to be a tough battle. It was one of those days.
“They played really well tonight.”
Wilson also acknowledged that it sometimes seemed like the Giants defense “knew what was coming,” which was a first-time experience for this Seahawks team. They hadn’t played an opponent that prepared and that well-disciplined all season.
“I think that that was kind of their game plan, obviously, I think, to really slow the game down, really not allow us to have any big plays, that was their philosophy,” Wilson added. “They played great, we didn’t, and that’s just the bottom line.”
