Schefter: Browns QB Joe Flacco linked to Patriots as free agency nears

Flacco may get the chance to start as a bridge quarterback for a rookie to learn from.

While the Cleveland Browns would like to have Joe Flacco back as their backup quarterback, he may be given the chance to start with the New England Patriots.

Speaking on the Pat McAfee Show today, ESPN insider Adam Schefter discussed the quarterback situation in New England. And his likely options to start under center for the Patriots included two former Browns quarterbacks:

“I think when we’re talking New England the first two names that come to my mind would be Joe Flacco and Jacoby Brissett.”

There is a connection, of course, as Alex Van Pelt has jumped on board as the offensive coordinator in New England after four years with the Browns. Likely drafting a quarterback with the third overall pick, it seems like the Patriots would prefer not to start that young man right away and give the 40-year-old a chance to mentor a rookie.

If Flacco is given the chance to start, there is little hope he will return to Cleveland.
