San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The San Diego Padres (78-79) and Los Angeles Dodgers (101-56) play the middle game of a three-game set Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET (ESPN). Let’s analyze the lines around the Padres vs. Dodgers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Dodgers lead 10-7

The Dodgers, who already clinched a playoff spot, took Tuesday’s opener 2-1. They remain 2 games back of the first-place San Francisco Giants in the NL West with 5 games to go. The Padres, losers of four in a row and nine of their last 10, were eliminated from postseason contention this past weekend.

LHP Ryan Weathers is projected to start for the Padres Wednesday. The rookie, who made his MLB debut in last year’s NLDS vs. the Dodgers, is 4-7 with a 5.01 ERA (91 2/3 IP, 51 ER), 1.34 WHIP, 6.9 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in 17 starts and 12 relief appearances this season.

  • Last outing: 2 IP in relief, 0 ER (1 unearned), 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K in 10-8, 10-inning home loss vs. Atlanta Braves Saturday
  • Last start: Loss, 3 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K in 10-2 loss at Los Angeles Angels Aug. 28
  • Career vs. Dodgers (regular season): 0-0, 0.84 ERA (10 2/3 IP, 1 ER), 3 H, 3 BB, 10 K in two starts and one relief appearance

RHP Max Scherzer is the Dodgers’ projected starter. He is 15-4 with an MLB-best 2.28 ERA (174 IP, 44 ER) in 29 combined starts between the Dodgers and Washington Nationals. He also leads the majors with a 0.83 WHIP and features 12.0 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 rates.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 5 IP, 5 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 7-5, 10-inning victory at Colorado Rockies Thursday
  • Since joining the Dodgers: 7-0, 1.43 ERA (63 IP, 10 ER), 0.71 WHIP, 12.1 K/9 and 1.1 BB/9 in 10 starts
  • Career vs. Padres: 6-2, 2.57 ERA (98 IP, 28 ER), 0.85 WHIP, 12.7 K/9 in 15 starts

Money line (ML)

BET DODGERS (-300) to WIN 0.4 UNITS. For a $100 player, this play is to wager $120 for a $40 profit.

I don’t like backing big favorites, but we’re talking Scherzer. Los Angeles is 10-0 in his starts this season after acquiring the three-time Cy Young winner from the Nationals in a July 30 trade.

Scherzer is on an 11-game winning streak, dating back to June 4 when was still with Washington. He is 2-0 with a 3.76 ERA (26 1/3 IP, 11 ER), 0.65 WHIP and 11.6 K/9 in four starts vs. the Padres in 2021.

The Dodgers also own the best home record in the majors at 53-23. The Padres are 33-43 on the road.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

ATS records: Padres 74-83 | Dodgers 77-80

LOS ANGELES -1.5 (-135) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager.

After dropping 8 in a row ATS (1-7 straight up) to the Padres in the middle of the season between April 18 to June 23, the Dodgers won the last 7 against their NL West rivals, going 5-2 ATS.

Over/Under (O/U)

O/U records: Padres 83-70-4 | Dodgers 66-81-10

BET UNDER 7.5 (+105).

The Under is 5-2 in Scherzer’s last seven starts. The Over cashed in his last outing, but that was in the thin air at Coors Field vs. the Rockies. The Under is 19-10 in his 29 starts this season.

Umpire Tripp Gibson is scheduled to be behind the plate. He has the best Under record among umpires this season at 22-6.
