Sean Payton’s game plan against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday was less than inspired. With his highly-decorated offensive line beaten to pieces and trust in Jameis Winston shaken by an early-game interception under pressure, the New Orleans Saints coach failed to get his offense into the end zone through three quarters for just the second time in his 243-game career.
ESPN Stats and Info found the only other instance of this happening in 2018’s regular season finale, when the Saints rested their starters after securing the No. 1 NFC playoff seed. Teddy Bridgewater led the declawed Saints offense to a 33-14 finish — ironically against the same Carolina Panthers that embarrassed Payton this time around.
The Saints have had opportunities to rally despite a 17-7 deficit in the fourth quarter. Here’s hoping Payton gets back in his bag.
