Rutgers loses at Northwestern: What we learned in the Scarlet Knights loss

Rutgers football lost on Saturday at Northwestern. This was a tough loss for the Scarlet Knights and their hopes for a bowl game.

It simply wasn’t good enough from Rutgers who just seemed overwhelmed by a team they should have matched up well against. Rutgers has lost for a fourth straight game, 21-7 at Northwestern.

Rutgers is now 3-4 (0-4 Big Ten) on the season. With the win, Northwestern improves to 3-3, the bye week obviously helping the Wildcats move on from a 56-7 loss at Nebraska the week before.

Rutgers went into halftime down 14-7, a fourth straight week where the Scarlet Knights have trailed at intermission. This was perhaps the poorest game Rutgers has played this season, marred by penalties, missed tackles, and poor execution.

And it may have been the poorest game since head coach Greg Schiano returned to Rutgers last season.

On offense, wide receiver Bo Melton was the star in his return back to the field after missing last week due to a shoulder injury. On defense, linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi was his normal solid self, making plays from sideline-to-sideline.
