Rutgers at Maryland odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Rutgers at Maryland odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-7, 1-7 Big Ten) visit the Maryland Terrapins (6-5, 3-5) Saturday for a noon ET kickoff (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rutgers vs. Maryland odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Rutgers just lost 55-10 to Penn State a week ago, failing to cover as a 19.5-point home underdog. Rutgers is now an even 5-5-1 against the spread (ATS) this season.

The Scarlet Knights are 2-3 straight up on the road, but 0-3 on the road in conference play. Rutgers offense has struggle. It ranks 120th out of 131 FBS programs in scoring (19.0 points per game) and 124 in total yards (295.0 per game).

Maryland is 5-6 ATS, coming off a 43-30 loss to Ohio State in which it covered as a 25-poing home underdog.

The Terrapins are 4-2 straight up at home, including 2-2 in Big Ten games. They are led by QB Taulia Tagovailoa, who has thrown for 2,445 passing yards with 16 TDs.

Rutgers at Maryland picks and predictions

Prediction

Maryland 35, Rutgers 14

Moneyline

PASS.

Rutgers (+425) was obliterated by Penn State, and Maryland (-575) has held strong against capable foes. Predicting an upset with Maryland at home doesn’t make much sense.

Against the spread

BET MARYLAND -14 (-113).

What the Scarlet Knights don’t do well is defend the run. For the Terrapins, it can beating opponents through the air or on the ground. That versatility will be useful here.

Rutgers allows 28.5 points per game and has struggled to do anything offensively most of the season. It is just 1-3 ATS over its last 4 games as well. Maryland ranks 70th in rushing yards per game (148.3 YPG) and 45th in passing yards (248.9 YPG).

With a defense that has seen reasonable success, and having covered 3 of its last 5 at home, I’ll back the Terrapins to win by 2 TDs. They’re at home and have the more stable offense.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 48 (-108).

Maryland scored 30 on a good Ohio State defense, a week after being held scoreless by Penn State. It should find some success at home against Rutgers, having scored 27 or more at home in every game this season.

As mentioned, the Scarlet Knights average 19.0 PPG, so if they maintain that pace and the Terps score at least 27, we’re almost at 48.

Considering the versatility of the Maryland attack, I would back points to be scored in this conference battle.
