The Denver Broncos had a strange game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday evening.
After the defense struggled through the first five games of the season, Vance Joseph’s unit stepped up against the high-powered Chiefs offense on Thursday evening. Denver’s own offense, meanwhile, had perhaps its worst showing under new coach Sean Payton.
It was the opposite of what we’ve typically seen from the Broncos this season. After the game, quarterback Russell Wilson accepted blame for his two turnovers that played a role in the 19-8 defeat.
“I think our defense played great tonight,” Wilson said after the game. “They battled all night. They came up with a pick, almost had two. They did a really good job keeping us in the game.
“I think offensively, we did some really good things. The two turnovers by me is unacceptable, that can’t happen. The first one, I tried to get it to Jerry [Jeudy] over top of the guy and he made a play. The second one, they tipped it up in the air, which is unfortunate because we had a good play.
“I thought we kept battling, kept believing. We did a good job getting all the way down the field to make it an eight-point game. Unfortunately, it just didn’t go our way at the end.”
Wilson finished the game 13-of-22 passing for 95 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked four times.
If the Broncos are going to get back on track this season, Wilson — and the entire offense — will need to step up going forward.
