RUpset! Rutgers women’s lacrosse downs top 10 Stony Brook with emphatic win

Rutgers women’s lacrosse landed a big upset on Wednesday night.

Rutgers women’s lacrosse got their most impressive win of the season, downing No. 7 Stony Brook on Wednesday night with a 12-7 win.

With the win, Rutgers is now 5-7 (0-5 Big Ten) and got a much-needed win. They went from being ranked for much of the first half of the season to now not even receiving votes in the latest rankings.

The Scarlet Knights came into the midweek match with four straight losses and a record in the Big Ten that was not necessarily indicative of their play this season.

Two of their losses in Big Ten play, against Penn State (receiving votes) and Johns Hopkins (receiving votes), came by a combined three goals. Had either one of those games, or even both gone their way, then this season would have a different feel to it.

All of which underscores the importance of Wednesday night. Rutgers was led by four goals from Cassidy Spilis.

With the loss, Stony Brook is now 9-3.

Tied 4-4 after the first quarter, Rutgers limited Stony Brook to just three goals in the remainder of the game. Sophia Cardello was impressive, posting 12 saves in the win.
