Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen spoke with the press on Wednesday during the Southeastern Conference’s media teleconference and among the many nuggets of knowledge he had to offer was the whereabouts of redshirt sophomore transfer running back Lorenzo Lingard, who many expected to contribute to the team this season.
The former five-star prospect out of Orange City, Fla., in 2018 began his collegiate career with the Miami Hurricanes, but after a futile two years in Coral Gables — including a season-ending knee injury during practice early in his freshman campaign — he entered the transfer portal to head upstate in search of a fresh start. From the sound of what the head coach had to say, Lingard has suffered yet another injury setback in his opening months with the team.
“He’s doing awesome. He has a great attitude. He’s a really hard worker. Got a little banged up in camp and missed some time.”
In addition to the physical ailments that Lingard is currently experiencing, there also exists the intellectual limitations that come with migrating from one high-powered program to another. The three other running backs currently ahead of him on the depth chart — juniors Malik Davis and Dameon Pierce, as well as redshirt freshman Nay’Quan Wright — have a bit more institutional knowledge than he, and therefore have an additional leg-up on him when it comes to finding playing time.
Eventually, Lingard will get his turn but for now, the three-headed beast at the tailback position has served sufficiently behind Heisman Trophy-hopeful Kyle Trask and his stable of talented pass-catchers.
