Things don’t always go according to plan during pro wrestling matches, and that’s doubly true when they’re as chaotic as the WarGames matches WWE just held at Survivor Series. That can lead to the participants being upset about what goes down, which may have been the case Saturday night with Roman Reigns.
According to Fightful Select, Reigns was not happy after the main event of Survivor Series in Boston, and delivered an “expletive filled” expression of his discontent. He also may have been injured, referring to “possibly having a ruptured ear drum.”
What caused his unhappiness? Fightful Select’s sources point to “an unplanned spot between he and Kevin Owens” while adding that it isn’t expected to affect their ability to work together going forward — no small thing since there have been reports that Reigns and Owens could face off at Royal Rumble.
Considering the overall number of moves and spots in a WarGames match, it’s difficult to single out any particular sequence that could have been the culprit, though Reigns and Owens did get paired together late in the bout. Owens hit several of his signature moves on the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion only to have longtime friend (and current Bloodline member) Sami Zayn prevent the referee from making the three count.
Reigns and Owens both have reputations as utmost professionals who know how to be as safe as possible while working even some dangerous looking spots, so this certainly sounds like something that falls into the “things happen” category. A ruptured eardrum, while painful, also generally heals on its own over the course of a several weeks, so it shouldn’t cause Reigns to miss any time even if it ends up being a confirmed diagnosis.
If nothing else, this should serve as a reminder that even the very best pro wrestlers don’t always have everything play out exactly the way they envision ahead of time, so all they can do is control the things they can control and hope for the best.
