Roman Reigns reportedly unhappy about ‘unplanned spot’ during WarGames

In the chaos of a WarGames match, one imagines there’s always the chance for an “unplanned spot” or two.

Things don’t always go according to plan during pro wrestling matches, and that’s doubly true when they’re as chaotic as the WarGames matches WWE just held at Survivor Series. That can lead to the participants being upset about what goes down, which may have been the case Saturday night with Roman Reigns.

According to Fightful Select, Reigns was not happy after the main event of Survivor Series in Boston, and delivered an “expletive filled” expression of his discontent. He also may have been injured, referring to “possibly having a ruptured ear drum.”

What caused his unhappiness? Fightful Select’s sources point to “an unplanned spot between he and Kevin Owens” while adding that it isn’t expected to affect their ability to work together going forward — no small thing since there have been reports that Reigns and Owens could face off at Royal Rumble.

Considering the overall number of moves and spots in a WarGames match, it’s difficult to single out any particular sequence that could have been the culprit, though Reigns and Owens did get paired together late in the bout. Owens hit several of his signature moves on the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion only to have longtime friend (and current Bloodline member) Sami Zayn prevent the referee from making the three count.

Reigns and Owens both have reputations as utmost professionals who know how to be as safe as possible while working even some dangerous looking spots, so this certainly sounds like something that falls into the “things happen” category. A ruptured eardrum, while painful, also generally heals on its own over the course of a several weeks, so it shouldn’t cause Reigns to miss any time even if it ends up being a confirmed diagnosis.

If nothing else, this should serve as a reminder that even the very best pro wrestlers don’t always have everything play out exactly the way they envision ahead of time, so all they can do is control the things they can control and hope for the best.

WWE Survivor Series 2022 results: WarGames times two

War … what is it good for? Absolutely nothing when it’s the real thing, but when it’s WarGames we’re talking about, it should be fine entertainment. WWE Survivor Series 2022 is giving us a double dose of WarGames from the TD Garden in Boston, with one of the dual-ring, steel cage, team-based matches for the men and women.

The former will see the Bloodline take on a coalition of the Brawling Brutes, Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens. While Roman Reigns‘ faction would figure to have an edge in solidarity due to their familial bonds, all is not harmonious on the Island of Relevancy as KO has already managed to get inside the head of Honorary Uce Sami Zayn. Whether Sami’s loyalty might be found wanting at the worst possible time is just one of the subplots worth watching on Saturday night.

The Women’s WarGames match should be no less intriguing, as a team gathered by Bianca Belair attempts to prevail over Damage CTRL and their two enthusiastic allies, Nikki Cross and Rhea Ripley. The late addition of Becky Lynch could be a blessing, a curse or both, but it’s sure to shake up an already combustible situation.

Three other matches will try their best to steal the card. Seth Rollins will defend his United States Championship against both Bobby Lashley and Austin Theory, Shotzi will attempt to write the next chapter of her underdog story by toppling Ronda Rousey, and AJ Styles will take a shot at putting The Judgment Day behind him once and for all if he can defeat former friend Finn Balor.

We’ll be updating this post with live WWE Survivor Series results all night, including for the two WarGames matches. Bookmark this page and check back throughout the evening for all the latest from what should be an eventful show from Boston.

WWE Survivor Series WarGames preview: When and where it’s going down, what to expect

Get ready for WWE Survivor Series WarGames with our full preview, including the start time, card and predictions for every match.

Let’s face it: For one of the traditional big WWE events, Survivor Series needed a refresh. Triple H and company have given it exactly that by folding in a fan favorite match from NXT — but whose roots go back much further to when it was originally invented by Dusty Rhodes during his Jim Crockett Promotions days — to create the first ever Survivor Series WarGames.

For those who have never seen the namesake match, it involves two teams doing battle within a steel cage large enough to contain two wrestling rings side by side. While one competitor from each team starts out the match, another enters every few minutes. That means the team that sends someone in first will always have an edge for a bit (two-on-one, three-on-two, etc.), which is why that advantage is valuable enough to compete for in matches leading up to the event.

The match doesn’t even officially get underway until everyone on both teams has entered, so the goal is to simply do as much damage as possible before that. To that end, all weapons are legal, and the only way to win this WWE version of WarGames is by pinfall or submission.

It’s a logical fit for Survivor Series, which has long been the domain of team vs. team matches, though traditionally they have been elimination affairs. Still, if there was any gimmick match that contained some of the event’s historical DNA, this is it.

Along with both men’s and women’s WarGames matches, there have been a handful of other matches announced, including two title bouts. While more could still be added, the WarGames matches figure to both go pretty long, so don’t expect this to end up with a dozen matches on the card when it’s all said and done.

It sounds like Kevin Owens getting injured may keep him out of Survivor Series WarGames

The KO-Sami showdown would have been worth the price of Peacock for a month on its own.

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Kevin Owens on WWE TV. More than a minute, actually — KO’s last televised match was on Sept. 30, in a six-man tag with Bobby Lashley and Dolph Ziggler against Austin Theory, Seth Rollins and The Miz.

While everyone else involved in that bout (even Dolph!) has been on Raw or SmackDown since then, Owens has only been wrestling on house shows over the past six weeks. Unfortunately, it sounds like one of those non-televised matches may keep him from facing off against a longtime friend and countryman in a way that fans would have been dying to see.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Owens was expected to be added to the men’s WarGames match at Survivor Series WarGames. But an MCL injury, which he suffered working against Theory at a live event this past Sunday, may scuttle those plans (h/t to WrestlingNews.co for the transcription).

I only heard he has a sprained MCL, but he was going to get it examined. … I believe he was going to be in the WarGames match. That’s not 100% confirmed, but it is certainly the talk, and he was supposed to be in something as a surprise. So it all adds up that it would be the WarGames match … If that was the case, this could cost him that.

Though not officially announced yet, all signs point to the men’s WarGames match featuring the Bloodline against a team that includes the Brawling Brutes and Drew McIntyre. Owens would have been the surprise fifth member of the latter team, which would have put him in direct conflict with Sami Zayn, now fully incorporated into the Bloodline.

There’s certainly still hope for a long-term story to unfold where Owens helps Zayn see the light with regard to the Bloodline and the duo reunite as full-fledged faces, but it appears it will have to go on without an intriguing showdown in the interim. Survivor Series WarGames, with or without KO, is set for Boston’s TD Garden on Saturday, Nov. 26.

Survivor Series WarGames is the perfect time to get John Cena his one match for 2022

John Cena at Survivor Series WarGames almost makes too much sense not to do.

There’s no question that John Cena is a busy man. So busy, in fact, that he hasn’t been around WWE much at all in 2022. He popped up for one night on Raw this summer to celebrate 20 years with the company, then off he went.

Cena hasn’t wrestled a televised WWE match since SummerSlam in 2021, and it’s been more than a year since he’s even been in a dark match. As Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful recently pointed out, that’s significant.

Cena has gone on the record as saying he will be back in WWE sooner or later, and it won’t be as a one-off deal. A program with Austin Theory has been teased, and would make sense for WrestleMania next year, or perhaps even SummerSlam if that would fit Cena’s schedule better.

But that would still mean he’d go matchless for all of this year, so let’s fix that. Extreme Rules is already booked, and Crown Jewel has its big non-weekly attraction already in Logan Paul. Happily, there’s another premium live event coming up before the end of the year whose format lends itself perfectly to a John Cena “one night only” appearance to keep his streak of years with a WWE bout intact: Survivor Series WarGames.

The addition of two WarGames matches to the event (the first in WWE main roster) history, not only ensure that Survivor Series keeps the team-based focus that has long been part of its hook, they create the perfect entryway for a surprise entrant. Need a face to balance out a team that is one short in the men’s WarGames match against the Bloodline or The Judgment Day (spitballing the two most likely guesses)? Bam, Cena is your guy.

Better still, it works as an announcement before the event, if the priority is getting more people to tune in, or as a surprise during the show to reward people who already decided to watch. It’s just like a mystery entrant in the Royal Rumble match, just slightly less obvious.

The counterargument to this idea is also common sense: At 45 and no longer doing WWE full time, maybe Cena doesn’t want to do a match with multiple rings and all kinds of weapons inside a huge steel cage. Sounds painful.

But again, it’s a team vs. team contest. Not everyone in a WarGames match has to spend the whole thing taking insane bumps. It wouldn’t be that hard to have Cena enter last for his team and then just not be on the receiving end of the craziest stuff.

There’s also another option (h/t to the latest episode of Cheap Heat for putting this idea in my head) which is a traditional Survivor Series match. WWE hasn’t said there will be any of these this year, but it also hasn’t said there won’t be.

It’s the same concept without the cages and chaos. A team of heels is on one side. A team of faces is on the other, but a man short. Maybe throw in the time-honored “crap, someone got beaten down backstage” subplot to make it that way. It looks like the good guys are going to go at it with a disadvantage. The trumpets hit. The crowd goes nuts.

About that crowd … We haven’t even mentioned where Survivor Series is being held. The TD Garden in Boston is essentially Cena’s home arena. It almost literally couldn’t have been written up any better.

All of this is assuming that keeping his annual string of in-ring performances is important to Cena. Maybe he’s content to return when the time is right for a longer program, which wouldn’t seem to be this year — though WWE has yet to announce its December premium live event, so who knows?

If Cena does want to get back in there in 2022, though, Survivor Series WarGames is the perfect place for it. And there are likely a ton of WWE fans who would love to see it.
