Robby Ashford is refusing to back down

Ashford has handled the adversity of losing his starting job better than Hugh Freeze had hoped.

Incumbent quarterback starter [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] reached a character crossroads last week when he was informed that he would not be leading Auburn’s offense for the season opener against UMass.

Instead of backing down, he is using this experience as a chance to continue fighting for the job. Head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is taking notice.

“He’s probably had his best three practices the last three practices,” Freeze said following Saturday’s scrimmage. “I’m really proud of him.”

Ashford’s response is exactly what Freeze had hoped for. Freeze mentioned Thursday that he feels confident that Ashford can help Auburn win down the road if he continued to work on his craft. He also says that Ashford will always have a package.

“Robby is not just a runner — he’s a dynamic runner, but he can throw. Certain things, he throws better,” Freeze says. “Hopefully, his consistency in that will continue to improve to where if we, whatever package he is in, they have to respect the pass off of it as well.”

If Ashford continues to progress, [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] will in turn need to turn up his game in an effort to keep his job throughout the season.
