From his tweets to his play to his decision making, Robby Anderson always kept Jets fans on the edge of their seats.
The speedy receiver had the Gang Green faithful in a similair position this offseason as they awaited word of his free agency decision. That word came in Tuesday: Anderson will reunite with his college coach, Matt Rhule, after signing a two-year, $20 million deal with the Panthers. Anderson will get $12 million guaranteed.
An undrafted free agent out of Temple back in 2016, Anderson grew up before Jets fans’ eyes. He recognized that after news of his departure broke, taking to Instagram to say goodbye to New York and the fans who welcomed him with open arms.
Anderson went on to thank the Jets for the opportunity, as he turned his position as a fringe starter into a significant payday. In his message, Anderson expressed regrets over failing to get the Jets to the playoffs or the Super Bowl.
Anderson finishes his Jets career with 207 receptions for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns.
It’s hard to blame Anderson for wanting to reunite with his college coach, especially when the Jets played the waiting game with many of their own free agents.
While Anderson was a fun character to follow on and off the field, it’s now up to Joe Douglas to try to find his replacement. The Jets don’t currently have a true vertical threat like Anderson, but there are still some options in free agency and the draft class is deep with receivers.
