Richard Sherman: 49ers best team in the NFL after Week 1

Richard Sherman never looked right wearing that red and gold 49ers uniform.

Richard Sherman never looked right wearing that red and gold 49ers uniform the few years he was there after leaving the Seahawks. Nevertheless, Sherman has remained a fan of San Francisco and his former teammates since he left – even as he’s since mended the fences with the Seahawks organization and is helping them out as a consultant.

Sherman is a very busy dude these days. He’s also running his regular podcast and putting in part-time work on Undisputed with Skip Bayless. In his most recent appearance, Sherman called his former 49ers the best team in the NFL. Watch.

Sherman makes a compelling case and we were tempted to put the Niners at the top of our Week 2 NFL power rankings. However, we weren’t quite ready to boot last year’s Super Bowl teams – the 2. Chiefs and the 1. Eagles from the top two spots.

If the Niners dominate the Rams this week the same way they did the Steelers (30-7) on Sunday, then we’ll be hard-pressed to put anybody else in that top spot – especially if quarterback Brock Purdy continues to play at a respectable level. In Week 1 against Pittsburgh he posted 220 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. That’s more than enough competence for such a loaded team to beat just about anybody in this league.

Another club that was compellingly dominant in Week 1 was the Cowboys, who destroyed the Giants on Sunday Night Football, 40-0. Next up are the now Aaron Rodgers-less Jets. Dallas should be able to take care of business there – and another shutout would also give them a strong case for the No. 1 spot. For now, we have the Niners at No. 3 and the Cowboys fourth.

Throw in a must-win game for the Seahawks and this is shaping up to be a very interesting Week 2. It begins tonight when Jalen Carter and the Eagles host Justin Jefferson and the Vikings.
